Difference Between Acidosis And Alkalosis. In this article, you will read about what is acidosis, what is alkalosis, what is the main difference between acidosis and alkalosis, and a comparison between acidosis vs alkalosis. Both the terms describe whether the blood has higher pH or lower pH than the normal value. We will discuss them in detail here.

What Is The Main Difference Between Acidosis And Alkalosis?

The main difference between acidosis and alkalosis is that the:

-Acidosis is a condition in which the blood has lower pH than the required value. The pH value is lower than 7.35 in blood.

-Alkalosis is a condition in which the blood has higher pH than the required value. The pH value is higher than 7.45 in blood.

What Is Acidosis?

When the pH level is lower than the normal value the person is suffering from academia, the disease is caused by acidosis. It is a condition in which the blood pH value is lower than 7.35 in blood. Due to the lower pH, the blood becomes acidic.

The acids enter into the bloodstream only in two ways, that are, the digestive system and the respiratory system. The acidosis that occurs by the digestive system is called metabolic acidosis. It is caused by high acidic food and beverages and reduced filtration of acids through kidneys.

Whereas, the acidosis that occurs by the respiratory system is called respiratory acidosis. It is the type of acidosis in which the lungs are unable to remove all the carbon dioxide that a body produces. This makes the blood acidic and is caused by alveolar hypoventilation.

What Is Alkalosis?

Alkalosis is a condition in which the blood has higher pH than the required value. The pH value is higher than 7.45 in blood. The disease caused by alkalosis is known as alkalemia. Bicarbonate is an important component in the blood, which helps to regulate the value of pH. The excessive number of bicarbonates cause alkalosis.

Like acidosis, there are also two types of alkalosis; i.e. metabolic alkalosis and respiratory alkalosis. Metabolic alkalosis is caused by problems in the digestive system. When acids in the stomach are removed by vomiting, there is a loss of acids. Resulting in a lower number of acids to neutralize with the components of the blood. Hence, the level of pH got increased.

Respiratory alkalosis is a condition in which there is a low level of carbon dioxide in the blood because of excessive breathing. This increases the pH of the blood, making it too alkaline. It is caused by alveolar hyperventilation.

Comparison Between Acidosis Vs Alkalosis:

-Acidosis is the lower pH in the blood.
-Alkalosis is the higher pH in the blood.

-Academia disease is caused by acidosis.
-Alkalemia disease is caused by alkalosis.

-In Acidosis, the pH value is below 7.35.
-In alkalosis, the pH value is above 7.45.

-Metabolic acidosis and respiratory acidosis are the types of Acidosis.
-Metabolic alkalosis and respiratory alkalosis are the types of Alkalosis.
