Its structure is also similar to the bone. The cementum is thickest at the apex and is thinner at its junction.

If we talk about the hardest tissue of the human body, the enamel will be on the top of the list. Enamel is a highly mineralized epithelial tissue of the body. Ameloblasts cells are responsible for its formation. It is the only tooth’s ectodermal derivative. Enamel does not have collagen as its organic constituents. There are 96% of inorganic constituents by weight, that is mainly hydroxyapatite crystals. Hydroxyapatite crystals are actually a form of calcium phosphate. These crystals are arranged like rods. Other hard tissue of the human body, like dentin, cementum and various bones also have hydroxyapatite crystals as their inorganic constituent.

Enamel has an avascular and acellular structure. It does not have the ability to repair or regenerate itself. There are various sizes and shapes of hydroxyapatite crystals. But, the hydroxyapatite crystals of the enamel are the longest and hexagonal in structure. They do not have any mature cells like cementum has cementocytes because they are lost with eruption.

The cementum is the mineralized connective tissues of the human body. It consists of HAp minerals (65 wt%), organic matrix (23 wt%) and water (12 wt%). The cementum’s structure and composition is very similar to the bone. It is thinnest at the junction and the thickest at the apex.

Cementum is formed as a repair tissue. It forms throughout life and keeps the tooth functional. Cementum is formed by the cells called cementoblasts. The cementoblast lines and covers up the surface of the cementum. The most superficial layer of cementum is the uncalcified cementum. There are the cells that lie within the cementum. These are called cementocytes. They are enclosed in the lacuna and are involved in the canaliculi process, but in a less complex network. The cementocytes are very limited.
