Difference Between Encoding And Encryption. In this article, you will read about what is encoding, what is encryption, and what is the main difference between encoding and encryption. Both the terms are related to each other, but have a little difference. Let us differentiate between them.
What Is The Main Difference Between Encoding And Encryption?
The main difference between encoding and encryption is that the:
-Encoding is the process in which we put simple characters into a special format to make them used by other systems. It is a character by character substitution of characters.
-Encryption is the conversion of readable data into unreadable data to avoid and prevent any unauthorized access. In encryption, multiple characters are processed at a time.
What Is Encoding?
The process in which simple characters are transformed into special and secured characters is known as ‘Encoding’. The computer used the process of encoding to make the data into another format. So that many other systems can use it. Encoding is not used for security purposes. The most common code or algorithm that is used by computers for text files is ‘ASCII’. It stands for American Standard Code For Information Interchange. This code is the combination of Upper and lower case alphabets, punctuation marks, numerals, and common symbols. Other various types used for encoding are Unicode, Uuencode, BinHex and MIME. The process of encoding also means analogue-to-digital.
What Is Encryption?
Encryption is the process in which we convert readable data or information into unreadable characters. This is done to prevent any unauthorized access to the data. The encrypted data is treated just like any other data. You can store it or send it in an e-mail message. If you want to access or read the data, it should be decrypted or decipher first to make it into readable form.
The original message is converted to an unrecognizable message in order to send it through the network. It cannot be identified, thus the hacker cannot steal it. A special encryption algorithm and a key are used to convert the original data into encrypted data. This converted data is known as Ciphertext. And encryption is also known as enciphering.
