Difference Between Endemic And Pandemic. In this article, we will discuss about what is endemic, what is pandemic, what is the main difference between endemic and pandemic, and a comparison between endemic and pandemic.

There are some viral infections that spread very rapidly. Some of them only spread between the communities, but others spread all over the world. One such viral infection that has taken all the world in its grip is Covid-19, which has ruined our lives since the December of 2019. In March 2020, World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic. Initially, it was actually endemic in some states of China. Here, you are wondering, what is the difference between endemic and pandemic. We will discuss it in the below paragraphs.

What Is The Main Difference Between Endemic And Pandemic?

The main difference between endemic and pandemic is that the:

-Endemic is an outbreak of any disease that affects a large number of people in any community, city, or region.

-Pandemic is an outbreak of a disease which is not limited to any specific area but spreads over multiple countries and continents.

What Is Endemic?

An Endemic is an outbreak of any disease that affects a large number of people in any community, city, or region. It is only limited to a single area or some cities. Like the seasonal flu, that increases in the winter season and we only see the expected level of increase.

Another example of an endemic is dengue fever. It mostly spread during the monsoon season. And specific areas like countries of Asia is mostly suffered from it. Dengue spreads by the biting of mosquitoes. If a person infected by dengue in any specific area travels to another country. And any mosquito bites that person again. That infected mosquito will now spread in the new area. This will make the disease pandemic.

Similarly, Malaria is endemic to parts of Africa. Ice is endemic to Antarctica.

What Is Pandemic?

A pandemic is an outbreak of a disease which is not limited to any specific area but spreads over multiple countries and continents. We can take the example of Covid-19. Firstly it was endemic and was limited only to the city of Wuhan, China. The travel of infected persons from various parts of the world makes this disease a pandemic. As it is an airborne disease and spread very quickly from person to person.

One such pandemic occurred in history, which created a great disaster in the world, especially in Europe. In 1918, there was an influenza pandemic known as the Spanish Flu. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. It was one of the deadliest pandemics ever happening in the history of this world, by which 500 million was infected and thousands of millions died due to the Spanish Flu.

Comparison Between Endemic Vs Pandemic:

-Endemic spreads only in specific areas or cities.
-Pandemic spreads across the world and continents.

-Endemic spreads slowly.
-Pandemic spreads relatively faster than endemic.

-In the Endemic rate of infection is constant.
-In the Pandemic rate of infection continuously increases.

-Endemic causes less disaster in people’s lives.
-Pandemic causes more disaster in people’s lives.
