Difference Between Hydrolysis and Dehydration Synthesis

Difference Between Hydrolysis and Dehydration Synthesis. In this article, you will get to know what is hydrolysis, what is dehydration synthesis, what is the main difference between hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis, and a comparison between hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis.

There are various chemical reactions occurring in the human body. These reactions are grouped according to their properties. Like in some reactions, molecules are developed, these types of reactions are called anabolic reactions. And in some reactions molecules are broken down, these reactions are catabolic reactions.

Difference Between Hydrolysis And Dehydration Synthesis:

The main difference between Hydrolysis and dehydration synthesis is that in hydrolysis larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones. Whereas, in dehydration synthesis, bigger molecules are formed by the joining of smaller molecules. water is involved in both types of reactions.

What is Hydrolysis?

The cleavage of the chemical bond in the presence of water is called hydrolysis. Water act as a reactant in his whole procedure. In this type of reaction, larger molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. That’s why reactant always has complex molecules, unlike the other products. A water molecule is added along with the reactant molecule, which split the chemical bond present in the reactant.

At the hydrolysis of the large molecule, the two small molecules are formed from the water molecule. Hydrolysis is the process that is the opposite of condensation. Because in condensation reactions water molecules are formed, while in hydrolysis reactions water molecules are consumed.

What Is Dehydration Synthesis?

In the process of dehydration synthesis, larger molecules are formed with the release of water molecules. A water molecule is released when two or smaller molecules form a covalent bond with each other. Therefore, the complex compounds are the final products of dehydration synthesis. In simple words, large molecules are produced in the dehydration synthesis. The dehydration synthesis is the combination of reactions happening at a time.

The dehydration synthesis reactions can also be called condensation reaction because in condensation there is also the formation of water molecules. In dehydration synthesis, larger molecules are formed by the releasing of water molecules.

Summary of Difference Between Hydrolysis and Dehydration Synthesis:

-Dehydration synthesis provide water molecules, whereas hydrolysis consume water molecules.
-Hydrolysis make smaller molecules from bigger ones. And dehydration synthesis forms large molecules from the smaller ones.
-Hydrolysis have more complex reactants. Dehydration synthesis has less complex reactants.
