Iodine is a Greek word ( ‘ἰοειδής ioeidēs ). It means purple or violet because of the colour of iodine vapour. Iodine is a natural element. Its symbol is I and the atomic number is 53. It is very important for human health as it prevents many health problems. IDD or Iodine Deficiency Disorder is the most cause of preventable brain damage in the world. It affects the development of the brain and body. It also maintains its temperature. Iodine can prevent diseases like goitre, cretinism, and intellectual disability. It adds the necessary chemical to the thyroid gland, which helps in producing various hormones. Iodine is found in the sea of sand that is touched by the sea. So, it can be found in lobsters, shrimps, haddocks, trout and sea vegetables.

So iodized salt is just like regular salt but with health benefits. It has a poor taste as compared to normal salt. Taking too much iodine is also not good for health as it can cause the condition just like iodine deficiency but in a milder version. The daily normal intake of iodine for the adult is 150 micrograms (µg), or 200-300 micrograms for pregnant women.

What is Non-Iodized Salt / Normal Salt?

Also known as table salt, it is a commonly used condiment and food preservative that is often present on the table during meals to sprinkle on food. Chemically speaking, on the other hand, non-iodized salt is a refined salt that contains about 97 to 99 per cent sodium chloride (an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl). It is produced by refining a mined salt where it is first dissolved in water, purified of other minerals out of the solution, and then re-evaporated. The same process is used for iodized salt, just the difference is that iodine is added.
