What Is Respiratory Acidosis?

Respiratory Acidosis is the type of acidosis in which the lungs are unable to remove all the carbon dioxide that a body produces. This makes the blood acidic. It is caused by alveolar hypoventilation. In hypoventilation, the carbon dioxide does not exclude fully from the lungs and tissues. There can be various causes of respiratory acidosis like asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, scoliosis, etc.

Respiratory Acidosis condition will have many symptoms from sleepiness to coma. In respiratory acidosis the Co2 level increases in the body. Due to increased blood flow the brain experiences the impairment, which leads to various symptoms. Common symptoms are fatigue, coma, confusion, headaches, anxiety, shortness of breath and sweating.

What Is Respiratory Alkalosis?

Respiratory Alkalosis is a condition in which there is a low level of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood because of excessive breathing. This increases the pH of the blood, making it too alkaline. It is caused by alveolar hyperventilation. When we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide, the respiratory system keeps the two gases in balance. But, when we breathe in too fast, the level of Co2 drops. This makes the blood pH alkaline.

Respiratory Alkalosis is caused by hyperventilation. It is also known as over-breathing. The other common causes of respiratory acidosis are panic attack, heart attack, pain, drug use, asthma, fever, infection, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism, and pregnancy.

The common symptoms for respiratory alkalosis are dizziness bloating, feeling lightheaded, numbness or muscle spasms in the hands and feet, discomfort in the chest area, confusion, dry mouth, tingling in the arms, heart palpitations, and feeling short of breath.
