Soak your feet with warm water:-

To get relief from the pain, swelling and redness, soak your feet in warm water several times a day. Take a water tub. Pour some warm and soak your feet in it. Do this 3 to 4 times a day. After doing this, place a cotton wedge between your nail and skin. It will help to grow the affected toenail above the skin. You can do this with the help of tweezers.

Epsom Salt:-

Epsom salt is also known as magnesium sulphate and is very helpful in the treatment of ingrown toenail. It relieves the pain and makes the skin softer to cut down the ingrown toenail. It is one of the best home remedies for ingrown toenails. Add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt in warm water. Soak your feet in it for 20 minutes and then make your feet dry. Do this 4 times a day.

Apple cider vinegar:-

Apple cider vinegar proves very helpful for ingrown toenails. It can relieve symptoms due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory nature and also prevent infection because it is acidic. There are two ways to use it.

Mix an equal amount of apple cider vinegar and warm water in the tub. Soak your affected toenail for 20 to 30 minutes. When you are done dry your toenail thoroughly. Do this 2 to 3 times daily.

The second option is to soak the cotton ball in raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Bandage this cotton ball on the affected toenail for a couple of hours, then remove it.

Hydrogen Peroxide:-

It relieves the pain and inflammation caused by an ingrown toenail and also reduces the risk of infection. Mix the half cup of hydrogen peroxide in a small tub of water. For 20 minutes soak the affected toenail. Do this twice daily.


The discomforts like pain, swelling, and inflammation caused by an ingrown toenail can also be cured by turmeric. It has such compounds which have the pain-relieving ability. You can use turmeric in two ways.

  1. Make a paste of some mustard oil and half teaspoon of turmeric powder. Apply this paste on the affected area and cover it with a bandage. Repeat 2 to 3 times a day.
  2. Boil a glass of milk with 1 teaspoon of turmeric. By drinking it twice daily, it will reduce pain and speed up the healing process.

Tea tree oil:-

Tea tree oil helps in reducing the pain and the risk of infection due to its antiseptic nature. Put one or two drops of tea tree oil in any other oil such as coconut oil or olive oil. Apply it to the affected area and cover it with a bandage. Do this 3 times daily until you get relief.

Trim your nails correctly:-

Always trim your nail correctly to avoid an ingrown toenail. Avoid them going in a curved shape. Do not start cutting your nails from the middle, but from the edges. Always file your nails to avoid sharp edges of the nails. And, use a good quality nail clipper.

Sensible Footwear:-

The main cause of ingrown toenails is mainly due to poorly fitted and tight fitted footwear. When you are suffering from an ingrown toenail, you must wear open and airy shoes to let your foot breathe and heal quickly.
An ingrown toenail may cause many problems, but little treatment can help to get rid of it. These home remedies for ingrown toenails may prove very helpful in the treatment.
